ITINERARY
Our tour starts around 08:00 at the designated meeting point for this tour. We will head north of the city, approximately 1.5 hours to reach QUITSATO, a giant 52-meter diameter Solar Clock made of a large stone mosaic that marks the different solstice and equinox lines, as well as the hours of the day. These are marked by the projection of the shadow of a 10-meter tall post located exactly in the center of this large circular platform. Here, we will learn about the fascinating history of geodesic missions in the Ecuadorian Andes and the great importance of solstices and equinoxes in the world.
At approximately 11:00, we will arrive in beautiful Cayambe, where we will visit Hacienda La Compañía. We will explore its main house and family treasure, built in 1919, surrounded by gardens. We will also visit its 17th-century Jesuit Chapel, which holds colonial treasures in its paintings, sculptures, and religious garments. We will visit the granary, the old barn of the estate, where freshly harvested roses will be on display. Old photos and documents will tell the stories of three centuries of agriculture, family history, and daily life at the estate. Finally, we will visit the rose plantation, the greenhouses, and the post-harvest area. You will learn about all the details of this fascinating business, not only for the quality of the processes but also for its important role in the community.
We will then head to Otavalo, where our guide will recommend a place for lunch. Afterward, we will visit the traditional and well-known MERCADO DE PONCHOS. This is the most famous Indigenous market in South America. Here, you will find a wide variety of crafts: exquisitely woven fabrics, wool ponchos, hats, tapestries, hand-knitted sweaters, scarves, carved tagua jewelry, and even Andean musical instruments.
Around 17:00, we will return to Quito.
